Maritime Mornings - Our partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

We’ve teamed up with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to launch a brand new single origin coffee, Maritime Mornings, with £1 from every bag going straight to the charity which couldn't be closer to our hearts.

Harry’s Story

To say this charity is close to our hearts would be a huge understatement. Like many families, which is always more than you ever think, we’ve battled childhood cancer. For Nick and I, it was our first born Harry, who in 2012 at age 4 was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukeamia. Thankfully for us this is one of the most common of childhood cancers and the treatment is relatively straight forward however it is very long, so after 3 years of chemotherapy Harry made a full recovery. He is now a gifted, tall, rugby-loving 16 year old about to embark on his A-levels.

Everyday we feel blessed. Along the way we have made some life long friends, a ward family community, who all ‘understand’ as we have all been through the same experience, with devastating varying outcomes but a truly special ‘connection' exists. Without the lived experience, you can never fully understand the impact it has on your family.

Harry went on his first EMCT trip back in 2017, when he was only 10 years old. It gave him the opportunity to meet people who had been through similar experiences, they have a ‘connection’ which is key to re-building life after such a traumatic time. We have always spoke openly about Harry’s illness, the trips have allowed him to share with others away from the family his own personal narrative.

And then of course there is the sailing. ‘WOW’ what an amazing opportunity they have provided him, the chance to learn the skills of sailing with all that it encompasses. The inspiration to venture out in the world and embrace exhilarating new adventures. It is truly awesome what EMCT facilitate for these children.

That's why we wanted to ‘give back’ it is incredible what EMCT have done for Harry. We have donated in the past but by creating a coffee we have produced a gift that keeps giving, with £1 from every pack going directly to EMCT.

To make sure “Maritime Mornings” is made as it should be, Baytown has donated a Stanley, cafetière to each of the EMCT yachts, and will supply the crews and volunteers with coffee for their trips.

More about the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust….

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people aged 8-24 on sailing and outdoor adventures to inspire them to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer.

Their ambition is to provide every diagnosed child in the U.K with one of their trips which would be amazing!

Introducing Maritime Mornings

We are really proud of this new coffee. It’s a rounded and full-bodied, single-origin coffee from Brazil. Sourced from the Daterra farm who are leaders in sustainable production and were the first farm in Brazil to become Rainforest Alliance certified.

The medium roast has chocolatey, nutty and cherry flavour notes. We recommend the coffee for use in an Espresso but it works just as well in a Cafetière or as a Filter. It needed to be a versatile coffee that can be enjoyed using any brew method so hopefully it will appeal to all coffee lovers and raise more pennies for EMCT. We love it here at Baytown HQ in our Espresso machine.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust put a choice of three names to a public vote Hero’s Brew, Maritime Mornings or Brighter Brews. After an amazing social campaign with over 800 votes Maritime Mornings was the outright winner!

We donate £1 from every pack sold to the charity to inspire young people to believe in a brighter future following their treatment.
